Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a neuro-behavioral problem!

Among various infectious diseases, psychiatric or mental diseases raise alarming bells. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one such neuro-developmental or neuro-behavioral disorder affecting children below seven years. Usually it becomes apparent when the child attending school. The teachers always complain that the child cannot be taught because it cannot pay enough attention.
Normal traits like impulse control also lag behind in development in these children. The developmental milestones are also delayed 30 to 40% in comparison to their peers. However the major symptomatology comprises of behavioral problems like distractibility and lack of concentration in any of the activities. They are unduly hyperactive thus creating havoc in school and their peers. This when undiagnosed, results in undue punishments in schools, from parents, and poor academic performance. Thus, when child grows older, he becomes submissive most of the times and feels inadequate on all levels, thus resulting in low self esteem. The genetic epidemiology of ADHD proves that genes have to do a lot with this disorder. Various twin studies have shown that it is a strongly heritable psychiatric disorder in families.
To understand and treat the condition, it is very much mandatory to know the course, prevalence and treatment of ADHD. Its social, emotional, financial, and familial stress is alarming. Some stimulant medications like methylphenidate and amphetamine have shown consistent results with some side effects though. There are not yet the definitive medicines available for ADHD. But our main aim should be to avoid unwanted after effects of the disorder all through the adult life. The major hurdle in achieving this is to be clear about the diagnosis at the earliest and then take care not to embarrass our kids by undue pressures. Let’s educate ourselves about being cool to these kids and handle the situation with empathy!
